Following their victory on Wednesday, Korea clinched first place in the Asian qualifications, where five teams fought in a round-robin style from August 17 through Wednesday. With a record of 2-1, Japan placed second overall, behind only China (who went 3-1), Kazakhstan (4-2), and India (3-2).
Only the qualifying tournament winner gets to the Olympics. Hence, Japan’s women’s handball team must compete in the Olympic Qualification Tournament for Women in April 2024.
According to Korea sports news reports, there will be a total of 12 countries represented at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris: the four continental champions from Africa, Asia and Oceania, the Americas, and Europe; the six countries that advanced from the World Olympic Qualification Tournament; the winner of the 2023 World Women’s Handball Championship; and host France. As of Thursday, only France, Norway, and Korea have secured a ticket.
Korea has participated in every Olympic Games since 1984 in Los Angeles. However, they have had trouble earning medals in subsequent years and only won bronze in 2008.
